What’s On in Sydney This Autumn

When the summer ends, the fun and events don’t have to finish with it. There are plenty of events and free things to do in Sydney during Autumn. There are still plenty of festivals to enjoy. The Royal Easter Show brings with it fun and excitement for the entire family. From petting zoos to the rides, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The Sydney Comedy Festival offers plenty of laughs. Sydney’s world famous Mardi Gras Parade is a colourful event that is not to be missed. Vivid Sydney lights up the city’s landmarks and puts on a dazzling light show. In addition to the festivals, the whale season begins as the whales start to make their way north. Learn something new at special museum exhibits and tours. Enjoy great foods and wandering through the stalls at markets. This Autumn, Sydney offers you plenty opportunity to make each day exciting.

Sydney’s favourite theme park will become a giant haunted house this Halloween and bring hell to the harbour! Luna Park offers Sydneysiders and adrenaline junkie visitors thrills and chills year round, but for Halloween they ramp it up a notch. Halloscream will transform the fun park into a ghoulish scare-fair with additional hair-raising adventures, roving park demons and horror-themed snacks. Rides and rollercoaster can start you off but be sure to "enjoy" the spooky mazes, the Hell Parade and the Mystery Manor haunted house; ‘tis the season. All the scares begin after dark, so show up at moonrise in your Halloween best, or pop into the Parlour of the Perished for a grizzly makeover. They’re extending the scares over five nights, so there’s plenty of time to explore all the new attractions. But if you've got baby scare seekers, beware: this event is restricted to kids over 14.

Sculpture By The Sea is the world’s largest free to the public sculpture exhibition. See the spectacular coastal walk transformed into a 2km long sculpture park over three weeks featuring 100 sculptures by artists from Australia and across the world. Pick up a catalogue to find out about the artists ($12 from helpful volunteers at the information marquees) After enjoying the sculptures why not continue the scenic walk to Coogee Beach? This scenic coastal walk continues to pass Bronte Beach, Clovelly Beach and Gordons Baybefore finishing on the beautiful Coogee beach where buses run back to the city. Bring your camera to capture both the artistic sculptures as well as the stunning natural scenery from this iconic coastal walk.

The main racing event takes place at the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria where more than 100,000 people attend. Local races are held throughout the country on this day and when the main race of the day occurs at the Flemington Racecourse it is televised on screens at race tracks across Australia. The race is televised live to an audience of about 650 million people worldwide. All around Australia stop what they are doing shortly before 3pm on Melbourne Cup Day to watch or listen to the main race either via television, Internet or the radio. Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in Victoria while other states around Australia celebrate by stopping work closer to the time of the main race to watch. Activities include office parties that feature hat and dress competitions, staff lunches at restaurants and afternoon teas where a television is available so workers can watch the main race. Expect to see people dresses up in races attire all around the country!
